"a lavishly filmed tour de force" ForbesLife

Latest Review
This is a splendid DVD that takes you on a trip to each of the different appellations in Napa Valley, with around five hours of information formatted into mini documentaries of 1 to 7 minutes. Simply pick a mini documentary and pour a DEAN & DELUCA wine from that appellation, learning all about its special characteristics while sipping along in your own home We love this as a gift for new Cali wine fans.

Students Changing the World

The horrors of Haiti's earthquake continue, but Napa Valley students continue to do their bit to help. February saw Napa High students Alana Freifeld and Megan Kostecka's "Hope for Haiti" concert at the Lincoln Theater, and now St Helena High's Shannon Nolan is staging an ambitious local art show and auction at Grace Church on Saturday April 3rd 4-6 pm. You can still donate art to the project, but this is a unique opportunity to purchase original art works for a good cause from some of the Valley's many talented and generous artists. See you there!
(Marvin Humphrey's "Cupcake" is shown here. You can see him crushing grapes with his feet in the Homewinemaking section of the Bearshead Napa Valley DVD).

Escaping the Recession

Conventional wisdom states that the best way to make a small fortune in the wine industry is to start with a large one, which is not very encouraging in the depths of this recession. Time to look at alternative strategies! Someone who has always bucked the system is Dario Sattui, whose V.Sattui winery in St Helena is celebrating its 125th anniversary. Founded by Dario in 1976 after studying accounting in College, one might wonder at the calculation of 125 years (-c'mon it's Tax Season), but his great grandfather, Vittorio, started his winery in San Francisco's North Beach in 1885, using grapes from St Helena. As successful as the winery was, surviving Prohibition proved impossible. Dario was left with Vittorio's original label and huge reserves of his great grandfather's passion and tenacity- he needed it! When he started out he lived in his VW camper van, and later stored wine in his living room for 7 years. Why waste money on a cash register when a wooden box will suffice? No customers pulling in? simple: make your relatives pose as picnickers and real customers will follow. His real innovation was selling everything direct and having a very good deli long before Dean & Deluca or Sunshine Market were dreamt of. If anyone doubts the success of this strategy take a look at his Castello di Amorosa in the hills north of St Helena. As John de Luca, former Wine Institute President, says "Dario is sui generis- one of a kind- a real original", but his own staff hit the nail on the head with "he's a wild one"! As another "wild Italian genius" once crooned, "I did it MY way!"
Anniversario Felice!

Not the End of the World as we know it!

If left unchecked the European Grape Moth could be a serious issue, but the vigilant growers of the Valley seem to be on the case. Cakebread Cellar's Toby Halkovich does not expect it to
unduly upset this year's harvest. Currently there is a county wide effort underway using "mating disruptors" -this doesn't mean spoiling the mood with a wind machine, but is a way of confusing the bugs with pheromones to stop future reproduction. For the bugs already here they will probably have to use eradicants later as well.

Cheers!

Kerry & James

Charity wine auctions are a great source for rare and unusual bottlings. While prices can get quite steep at the big name live auctions (although you shouldn't forget the tax breaks, nor the karmic returns on your philanthropic self indulgences.. ), it is often well worth checking out the attendant silent auctions for more affordable gems.
