Latest Review
This is a splendid DVD that takes you on a trip to each of the different appellations in Napa Valley, with around five hours of information formatted into mini documentaries of 1 to 7 minutes. Simply pick a mini documentary and pour a DEAN & DELUCA wine from that appellation, learning all about its special characteristics while sipping along in your own home We love this as a gift for new Cali wine fans.

Edinburgh's Gathering 2009
Greetings from Scotland, where I am adding finishing touches to the Whisky DVD and have been attending Homecoming 2009- a 2 day Highland Games whose central event was a unique march up the Royal Mile from Holyrood Palace to Edinburgh Castle.

Over 6,000 Scots from around the World made their way in battalions of 1,000, grouped by family or clan, with the Lonach Highlanders leading the third group.

For someone based in Napa Valley to get his tan in Scotland seems absurd or downright perverse, but this event was blessed with a perfect day. Whisky lovers will know that sunshine is needed for ripening the barley, but the most important contributor to the MAGIC of whisky making is rain to keep the air damp for the long slow maturation process. The final day of preparation for the event saw more than enough of this in a near continuous biblical downpour, so have no fear for the health of your future drams.

The House Malt
Talisker Distillery were on hand to keep us all going, lest you thought for a moment that the event was fueled by pride and bagpipes alone. This beautiful spicey, smokey, peppery Malt from the misty Isle of Skye played a supporting role in Charley Wilsons War and from these humble beginnings is about to be thrust into A-List red carpet celebrity with a featured role in the Bearshead Scotland DVD. Talisker is the perfect accompaniment to Haggis, curry and smoked mackerel, which, as wine lovers will recognize, are all dishes that can be quite hard to find suitable wines for.
(Picture shows the road to Talisker)

Red Hot Chili Pipers
As well as all the caber tossing, piping and clan activities, the music stage saw some of Scotlands finest musicians in action- any one of whom would have justified the price of admission. Capercaillie, Dougie Maclean, Julie Fowlis, Red Hot Chili Pipers, and Battlefield Band were all there, the only absence being the best of the lot, Old Blind Dogs, who luckily for those who missed The Gathering, are playing in CA, AZ, NY and MN from September 2-27th.

And if you want the authentic Highland Games experience, there is still time to get in on the fun- join us at our family games- the Lonach Gathering- on August 22nd.

Cheers!

Kerry and James

Charity wine auctions are a great source for rare and unusual bottlings. While prices can get quite steep at the big name live auctions (although you shouldn't forget the tax breaks, nor the karmic returns on your philanthropic self indulgences.. ), it is often well worth checking out the attendant silent auctions for more affordable gems.
