Latest Review
What I like most about the DVD is its depth of information about the Napa Valley... Even for many who live here, including myself, there are nuances which it takes nearly a lifetime to fully experience about the many truly different areas which make up the Napa Valley

New Year, New Decade, How to Watch?

The past decade has been a harrowing time for the music industry, but ultimately a great one for musicians and music lovers, now movies are facing their own existential crisis: If you have a 5ft wide TV in your house why should you struggle into town to see anything bigger, meanwhile the YouTube effect reduces our attention spans to clinically dangerous nano-lengths, whilst simultaneously immunizing us against non existent production values...... and yet, and yet, we could still be on the cusp of a new golden age.

With instant global distribution just a few mouseclicks away and a video camera in every 'phone, it is easy to assume that the end is nigh for movie production, however the ability to tell a story effectively and concisely is as much in demand as ever. Netflix and streaming video make great full length documentaries available whenever and wherever you want them. Meanwhile feature film directors get to choose whether to make Big or Small Screen films. Big Screen Films need so much more than the largest home-cinema-system to show the full extent of their art, and I predict that the few cinemas able to show them will thrive. Napa Valley is blessed with the Cameo in St Helena, which is like a very high end private screening room, showing the latest releases to the full, and it is worth seeking out its equivalent wherever you live.

The story of "Avatar" might not appeal (cynics suggest it is a silent movie), but it does take the latest technological bull by the horns to show what can be done. At the opposite end of the big screen spectrum there are the HiDef screenings of opera and ballet- part of the thrill of these is their ability to put you almost on the stage with the performers. As this technology is so new the performers have not learned to play to the cameras yet: the intimacy of watching King's College Cambridge's Messiah is extraordinary, allowing one to feel the raw exultant joy experienced by the soloists as they perform in this sacred space, and also to speculate on the backstage gossip that seems to be written all over the bassoonist's face. Not to mention the contrast between the angelic voices of the boys and the recent skateboarding scars on their faces. None of this was possible in the past, and would have been largely unnoticed by the live audience, but adds a new dimension to the experience.

Cameo Deal

Although their ticket prices are very reasonable The Cameo offers free popcorn and admission to "Golden Ticket" purchasers, which is the cinematic equivalent of becoming a sponsor of the opera- at $1,000 pa it is not for all, but if it helps preserve this important Valley cultural center it will money well spent.

Camera for Hire

At Bearshead we make mini documentaries that condense a lot of information into the shortest running time (making us very web-ready) but we also bundle a lot of them together to tell the whole story of a place. With our own DVD of the Napa Valley, five hours sounds like daunting overkill, but it actually means we give you a comprehensive resource that is simple to use, where all the information is divided into very enjoyable bite sized chunks. We are also available to help you tell your story, whether in 3 web minutes, or as a longer lusher cinematic event- either way in these troubled times we are ready and able to spread the word for you while simultaneously saving you from the trouser-bomber induced nightmares waiting for you at your nearest check-in desk.

Live Drama

This month sees a lot of live drama as well- auditions for Follies & Shakespeare, a Dreamweavers show, and at The Cameo St Helena High School's own Luke Myers (a name to watch) directing a student production of Freak. I could happily go on about his talents, but for $5 you should just see for yourself! January 23/4 at 10am or Noon.

The Paris Tasting of Cheese?
Oxbow Cheese Market are hosting a taste off of French and American Cheeses in Napa on January 20th. Lassa Skinner of Culture magazine (seriously it is a must read) will host several cheesemakers, and Ancien will supply the wines.

With Our Very Best Wishes for 2010,

Cheers!

January
Vineyards: Pruning
Wineries: Racking, Bottling.

All sorts of wine & food & art & music events happen all the time at the Napa Valley Museum and the Culinary Institute of America. For Music, Theater and other non wine related listings try: Lincoln Theater (Yountville), Napa Valley Opera House (Napa), Cameo Cinema (St Helena), Uva (Napa) and alsoSilo's (Napa), Calistoga Inn , The White Barn (St Helena)

Charity wine auctions are a great source for rare and unusual bottlings. While prices can get quite steep at the big name live auctions (although you shouldn't forget the tax breaks, nor the karmic returns on your philanthropic self indulgences.. ), it is often well worth checking out the attendant silent auctions for more affordable gems.
We make no guarantees that this calendar is comprehensive, but would be very grateful for any suggestions of upcoming events that we should know about.

Unless otherwise noted all phone numbers are 707 area codes

The links in the Calendar will take you directly to the event's website (which will open in a new window). If you want to find out more without leaving Bearshead please click on the details button at the bottom of each day, which will give you a more detailed rundown of the event.
