Latest Review
This is a splendid DVD that takes you on a trip to each of the different appellations in Napa Valley, with around five hours of information formatted into mini documentaries of 1 to 7 minutes. Simply pick a mini documentary and pour a DEAN & DELUCA wine from that appellation, learning all about its special characteristics while sipping along in your own home We love this as a gift for new Cali wine fans.

Wine Auction is here again...
June in the Napa Valley means Auction Napa Valley. This event always means months of preparation by armies of volunteers, but over the last 29 years this extraordinary fundraiser has raised $85 million for local health, youth development and affordable housing non-profits. Don't despair if you can't make it to the actual event- joining in is just a mouse click away with the on-line auction!

This year's auction is chaired by the Trefethen Family. Janet Trefethen's amusing and little known tales of Valley life in the early '70s, as well as hair-raising stories of starting a winery are beautifully told in the Bearshead Napa Valley DVD. Trefethen Winery has grown and thrived and Janet is eloquent in her assessment of those who helped bring the valley to success and how they were able to do it.

Recession Fun
Cheers! St Helena's first outing was a roaring success despite the unusual rain. This Friday, June 5th, you can visit shops and galleries, taste wonderful wines and food from some of Napa Valleys finest, while running into friends and meeting new ones. It's the beginning of our own version of Promenade. So, if you did all your Auction bidding online, you can discover the delights of an evening out on Main Street.

There are plenty of other cheap/free events including open air concerts and plays around the Valley. Our calendar tends to list 'one off' events and wine specific happenings, but we encourage you to check out the links to the clubs and theatres listed at the top of the calendar. As new empty nesters we are rediscovering going out in the evening, and are delighted to discover all that is on offer right here in our Valley.

No matter how many events you get out to this month, you are sure to be doing some BBQing at home....so here's the latest in "How to BBQ a Mean Burger" from Cakebread Cellars' Chef Brian Streeter.

Living Off Your Children!
If Maddoff scuppered your retirement plans: sneak $200 from under your mattress and pack your children off to the Small Business Development Council's Youth Enterprise Boot Camp at Napa College: 5 days of basic training for 14- 27 year olds to help them to start full-time/part-time or summer businesses. In case of emergency there are scholarships available too.

Michaela Rodeno
Michaela Rodeno, another star of the Bearshead Napa Valley DVD, has retired after an exemplary career at the helm of St Supery. She was instrumental in bringing new innovations not just to St Supery, but to the entire Valley, from her work with the Napa Valley Vintners to helping establish "Women for Winesense". As well as all her other claims to fame, Michaela is responsible for my being in the Valley at all. As a tour guide at Epernay's Moet & Chandon I met Michaela in 1976. That chance encounter led to a job with her at Domaine Chandon, where I met Kerry. So here we all are and now you know who to blame! We wish Michaela all the best in her next venture....we know she won't be sitting still for long.

Cheers!

Kerry and James

Charity wine auctions are a great source for rare and unusual bottlings. While prices can get quite steep at the big name live auctions (although you shouldn't forget the tax breaks, nor the karmic returns on your philanthropic self indulgences.. ), it is often well worth checking out the attendant silent auctions for more affordable gems.
We make no guarantees that this calendar is comprehensive, and would be very grateful for any suggestions of upcoming events that we should know about. Sometimes events are announced or changed after we have sent out this e-mail: later in the month you might want to check the updated on-line version here
