Latest Review
What I like most about the DVD is its depth of information about the Napa Valley... Even for many who live here, including myself, there are nuances which it takes nearly a lifetime to fully experience about the many truly different areas which make up the Napa Valley

Empty Nest-ers on the Warpath!

As producers of the Napa Valley Events Calendar there is an understandable misconception that Kerry & I are kicking up our heels with a skinfull of 100 pointers most nights of the week. The truth has always been that after 2-3 intense days of trawling the web, cross referencing thousands of e-mails, calling wineries and fiendish coding we tend to say "Thank God we got another edition out without killing each other" and then scurry to catch up with our lives. So in October to celebrate our new "empty nest-er" status, we made the conscious decision to really use the calendar and get out more- and what fun we had! As we can't expect all our readers to live the high flying movie executive lifestyle that is Bearshead, we skipped the limo and the big-name-high-ticket events but still drank, danced and auction shopped with abandon:
The final Cheers! St Helena of the season showed how quickly the town can actually reinvent itself, and how hungry we all were for some nightlife, The Sally Clinic Ugandan Midwives Fundraiser saw us dancing under the stars and snagging great bottles at bargain prices for a really good cause at Connolly Ranch, then on to Yountville the next day for the Suscol InterTribal PowWow for a glimpse of a side of the Valley that most are completely unaware still exists (although the History section of the DVD contains some of their stories). The second week we were at the Corpus Perspicuus opening at the Napa Valley Museum, which included fabulous accapella singing amidst a very interesting show (on until Nov 18), dinner with friends meant that we had to miss the Calistoga Rockabilly RoundUp, but we were back on the cultural warpath with an Oxbow Artist Lecture by Trevor Paglen, which was very different but fascinating, especialy when fuelled with Hog Island Oysters ($1 each!) from Oxbow Market's Locals Night . The St Helena Pet Parade was its usual unique self, and then more dancing in the evening at the Napa Valley Museum with Hot Jazz of Marin. Beer & Cheese at the St Helena Library was Napa Valley in action, though surely the organizers could have guessed that if you give St Helenans (or anyone else for that matter) free beer and free cheeses they are quickly going to switch to pub/selfproclaimed expert mode and the visiting speakers (who were very entertaining) would be drowned out in the general exchanging of opinions on the merits of the beers and cheeses on offer. A lot of fun though, and hats off to the Library for offering so many diverse free events. To find out what excitements this month holds check out the Calendar

Around the AVAs

Students of the Bearshead Napa Valley DVD will know that there are 21 separate regions of the Valley, all of which are breathing a huge collective sigh of relief now that the grapes are in. With a couple of pretty serious rains in September and October (not just the regular "dust settlers", but actual measurable downpours) there were certainly some tense moments, but according to Pam of Crocker & Starr this was one of those rare vintages where the winemakers' spouses got to enjoy a semi-normal married life rather than the typical crush widowhood of more frenzied years.
Appellation St Helena recently gave a tasting of 48 of the region's 2006 Cabs, which tended to confirm the views of Andy Beckstoffer, Walt Raymond, Lewis Carpenter and Dirk Hampson in the DVD, namely that the gravelly well drained soils and temperate climate of this mid Valley region produce rich well balanced Cabernets. Overall the wines I tasted will benefit from a few years bottle aging, but they have the right balance of tannins, acid and concentrated fruit to make the wait very worthwhile.

Farewell to Peters Video

Peters' Video in St Helena and Calistoga have been important fixtures in our lives for years, but sadly the march of technology means that the concept of a neighborhood video store is coming to an end. Mike & Anita have accepted the writing on the wall and are retiring while they are still ahead, so we wish them both well, although we will miss the knowledgeable movie critiques and the casual encounters with old friends that Peters gave us. Peters Video was also an enthusiastic and convenient source for your Bearshead Napa Valley DVD purchasing needs- let's face it: you never know when you might need to buy another copy for a visiting friend. You could of course buy in bulk from us, but for that impulse purchase the St Helena Wine Center on Main Street is the place to go--AND they stock all of the featured wines as well.

Cheers!

James & Kerry

Charity wine auctions are a great source for rare and unusual bottlings. While prices can get quite steep at the big name live auctions (although you shouldn't forget the tax breaks, nor the karmic returns on your philanthropic self indulgences.. ), it is often well worth checking out the attendant silent auctions for more affordable gems.
