Bearshead
October Newsletter

James has returned from Scotland with a stack of great interviews with leading distillers, so the second DVD in our series on the premier wine & spirit regions of the World is now well under way. He spent most of his time filming on the island of Islay, which is off Scotland's west coast. It has half the population of St Helena and 8 distilleries and can make the strongest claim for seperate "appellation" status, and if you want to get really pretentious possibly even "terroir". This is the region that produces the very peaty whiskies that you either love or assume to be an industrial grade cleaning product. If you are in the latter camp relax: we will be filming in the Highlands in January. Many experts now agree that Scotland's Single Malts are the finest spirits in the World, so this next DVD will examine that claim, and help wine-loving whisky novices find their favourite dram for every occasion. There are great stories, passionate people and incredible scenery, so we have all the necessary ingredients for another great DVD. We are hoping to release it in August 2008, so you have next year's Christmas list sorted. Hmm... what homegrown Napa Valley product is fascinating, beautiful, easy to post and available for THIS holiday season we wonder???

Cheers!

James & Kerry

FAMILY NEWS

Although he succeeded in interviewing a dozen distillers, most of James' time back home in Scotland was spent with his father, who died on September 3rd. Given that he was 91, and actually died of old age, this should not have been a surprise, but of course it was.

500 family & friends, including the Lonach Highlanders and Pipe Band attended his full scale Highland funeral. You can read his obituary in The Times (of London) and The Scotsman

Cult Quest Update

Back in the June Newsletter we looked at three new small wineries. Since then:

Spoto has completely sold out at his suburban Sacramento winery, although you might find a bottle at one of his restaurant outlets. Stuart likes to blame the Sacramento Bee's full page spread, but we know better..

Macauley has just received 96 points from the Wine Spectator for his 2004 Macauley Beckstoffer To Kalon Cabernet Sauvignon. He still has a few bottles of the '03 left.

HunterIII was chosen as Wine of the Week by Novus Vinum

Calendar for October

Charity wine auctions are a great source for rare and unusual bottlings. While prices can get quite steep at the big name live auctions (although you shouldn't forget the tax breaks, nor the karmic returns on your philanthropic self indulgences.. ), it is often well worth checking out the attendant silent auctions for more affordable gems.
We make no guarantees that this calendar is comprehensive, but would be very grateful for any suggestions of upcoming events that we should know about. Sometimes events are announced or changed after we have sent out this e-mail: later in the month you might want to check the updated on-line version here
