Latest Review
This is a splendid DVD that takes you on a trip to each of the different appellations in Napa Valley, with around five hours of information formatted into mini documentaries of 1 to 7 minutes. Simply pick a mini documentary and pour a DEAN & DELUCA wine from that appellation, learning all about its special characteristics while sipping along in your own home We love this as a gift for new Cali wine fans.

Drinking with Indians, Chocolate and Cheese

Whenever I tell anyone that I make movies about wines & spirits the consistent, and let's face it, obvious response, is an enquiry about unpaid internships. At the risk of seeming to rub the disappointed applicants' noses in it, I have to tell you about a recent series of Single Malt Tastings filmed here in the Valley for the upcoming Bearshead Scotland DVD. These show how Single Malts can be the answer to problem pairings- boldly going to the territory that tends to be difficult for wines. True, Cabs can work with chocolate, but it is rarely a natural fit, whereas, as St Helena's Woodehouse Chocolates' John Anderson says "Whisky loves Chocolate". Similarly, Germans and Alsatian style wines are good with curries, but really they are only a salve, whereas a rich Highland Malt will meet a robust Vindaloo head-on as its equal, which Neela Paniz of Napa's award winning Neela's Indian Restaurant, and I had a great time researching.

Cheese would seem to be another story, with countless wine matches that must've been made in Heaven, and yet, and yet.... Lassa Skinner of Culture Magazine and the Oxbow Cheese Merchant, says that their best seller is aged Dutch Gouda, whose butterscotch flavor can be tricky with wine. Pairing means that the combination is greater than the sum of its parts, with each complementing the other, so Gouda provided a perfect opportunity for pairing with some good sherry-oaked Speyside malts during this cold wet winter.

A potential downside to these adventures is that Kerry has now discovered the point of peaty smoky Islay Malts- they go beautifully with Gouda, strong old cheddar, stilton and vacherins. She had been pretty outspoken about her dislike of Islay, so why press the point, but now that my 1990 Ardbeg ($140) and 16 year old Lagavulin ($100) are under threat, I am wondering whether maybe I should have gone the Intern route after all? On the other hand, if this development makes the irreplaceable unpeated 23 year old Ch. Lafleur Pomerol aged Bruichladdich ($350) last longer, then let me pour you a smoky dram my dear!

Gourmets at the Movies
There are no shortage of reasons for loving life in Napa Valley, but an overheard exchange the other night at the Cameo Cinema is a good vignette of why we love it here. The customer wanted to know the provenance of the popcorn- fair enough, although most of us who are concerned about genetically modified industrial junk food have just accepted that avoidance is the only solution- but the Cameo staff not only knew the answer- to the satisfaction of all- they knew the provenance of their butter as well! In her introduction to the movie, owner Cathy Buck announced that soon they will be serving espressos with beignets & croissants. If you can eat well at the movies life is certainly good!

Cheers!

Kerry & James

Charity wine auctions are a great source for rare and unusual bottlings. While prices can get quite steep at the big name live auctions (although you shouldn't forget the tax breaks, nor the karmic returns on your philanthropic self indulgences.. ), it is often well worth checking out the attendant silent auctions for more affordable gems.
